Course Outline

Introduction

My background and experience as an occupational therapist treating people with falls and teaching people about falls. My own experience as an active fitness participant and what I have learned about falls, including my own.

Brief survey of audience

Balancing on one foot not an exercise but rather an measure of a person’s balance (5 seconds)

Will discuss some simple exercises later in presentation.

Components of the aging
process as it relates to balance

Physical Components of Fall Prevention: Strength of lower body, endurance, crossing the midline, motor processing speed. (Squatting, lunges, core work) Gives you confidence..are you steady on your feet?

Cognitive Components:

Awareness of surroundings
Speed of processing
environmental information
Judgement about risk and safety.

Prevention of Falls:

Safe Rehearsed Practices inside and outside of the home

Apparel, shoes and other items of clothing that can contribute to falls.

Equipment; Proper use and care of cane, walkers, shower chairs/benches etc.

Watch sidewalks! Walking on grass dangerous! Be especially vigilant in unfamiliar settings; restaurants, rest rooms, theaters, etc.
